Silicon (Si) window sheets made of optical-grade silicon have become popular products for applications in the spectral range of 1.2 - 7 μm. Silicon has a very low density (half that of germanium or zinc selenide), so it is very suitable for applications that are sensitive to weight, especially those in the range of 3 - 5 μm. Its density is 2.329 g/cm³, and the Knoop hardness is 1150. Therefore, it is harder than germanium and less likely to break.
