Germanium (Ge) is widely used in lenses and windows for thermal imaging and FLIR (Forward-Looking Infrared) applications. Its high refractive index makes it particularly interesting. The useful transmission range of germanium windows is from 2 to 12 micrometers. Germanium is opaque in the visible spectrum.
Germanium has the characteristic of thermal runaway, which means that the transmission decreases as the temperature rises. Therefore, Ge windows should be used at temperatures below 100°C. Germanium has a higher Knoop hardness (780), making it an ideal choice for infrared applications that require robust optics. When designing weight-sensitive systems, the high density (5.33 g/cm³) of germanium should be taken into account.
